Night Trippin' with Dr. John on a Full Moon

By Carey Gelpi

Anytime a Blues Lover can spend the night with David Hyde and Jonathan Long playing together, it is certain to be an experience to remember, but combine that with an intimate night with Dr. John in Thibodaux on May 2 (the Flower Full Moon) was beyond even my wildest dreams.  David, Jonathan (Boogie) and I arrived at the Bayou Country Club in Thibodaux around 5:00 p.m.  We were treated like Kings by the establishment and ushered to the private dressing rooms of the band.  After we had the equipment and instruments set up we retired to the dressing rooms to change into more appropriate attire.  To my surprise, Dr. John and his beautiful girlfriend, Bella, walks in.  I wasn't the only one standing in awe of this legend.  Both David and Boogie were like children on Christmas Morning.  Dr. John was so genuinely interested in both men's careers and seemed quite impressed with Boogie's abilities at such a young age.  When the music began every soul in the building was aware of the unique atmosphere in the room that night.  I was busy trying to capture the evening's events on my camera but was still overcome by the feeling of such great music.  There were three separate sets allowing more private time with Dr. John in the break room.  He was so accommodating to all of his fans and he didn't turn away any requests for an autograph (even David and Boogie had Dr. John autograph their guitars).  As for myself I was lucky enough to get the original song list for the night, autographed to me.  What a treasure!!!!
